Small-caps positive into midday; SAY, SB, and PAY lead gainers

Small-cap stocks edged into positive ground into midday trading on support from commodity names, but in general the market appeared to be in a “breather” mood after Tuesday’s manic upside push when Federal Reserve policy makers surprised the market with aggressive interest rate cuts. Some of today’s small-cap gainers are Satyam (NYSE:SAY), Safe Bulkers Inc. (NYSE:SB) and VeriFone Inc. (NYSE:PAY).

Other Market Watch highlights today included:

• Price action so far today in small caps has been pretty tame, with volume light and trading ranges tight.
• Top performers today are health care facilities, coal stocks, commercial printers, railroads, mining and metal stocks and steel companies.
• Crude oil prices held relatively steady despite a hefty 2.2 million barrel a day output cut pushed through by OPEC members.
• Real estate investment trusts (REITS) were among the poorest performers so far today, as were houseware and home furnishing stocks.

Small Cap Gainers:

Satyam on Tuesday said it would spend $1.6 billion to purchase family-owned infrastructure companies; shareholders revolted, stock plunged 55%. Satyam's chairman backed away from the deal overnight, stock is now up 41%. See (NYSE:SAY).
Safe Bulkers Inc. jumped 25% and is now up 165% from the November lows. See (NYSE:SB).
VeriFone Inc. rose 24% as the electronic payment technology firm reported earnings in line with expectations and forecast profits above the projection. See (NYSE:PAY).
Energy Conversion Devices is climbing above 10% despite a maintained "sell" rating by Citi. See (Nasdaq:ENER).

Small Cap Losers:

MWI Veterinary Supply Inc. tumbled 19% as the distributor of animal health products erased a huge chunk of a recent rally in one fail swoop. See (Nasdaq:MWIV).
Leggett & Platt down 10% after it cuts Q4 guidance. See (NYSE:LEG).
MarineMax secures amendment of credit agreement; shares topple 8%. See (NYSE:HZO).

Russell opens steady in the morning; PCH, TLVT, and JOYG lead gainers

Small-cap stocks opened lower but battled back to steady levels, pressured by profit-taking after Tuesday’s big FOMC rally. Weak profit news on the financial front and lingering worries about the recession prompted a pause in the updraft, which saw small-caps climb to the highest daily close Tuesday since mid-November.  Some of today’s small-cap gainers are Cadence Pharmaceuticals Inc. (NYSE:PCH), Telvent  (Nasdaq:TLVT) and Joy Global (Nasdaq:JOYG).

Other Market Watch highlights today included:

• This morning, the yield on benchmark 10-year notes was down a whopping 6%, indicating strong demand for underlying Treasury securities.
• The only physical product making huge waves right now is the cocoa market, which rose to 22-year highs in London trading.
• Commodities should find underlying support from the recent slide in the U.S. dollar, which tumbled to 13 ½-year lows against the yen today.
• Emerging market stocks found support overnight, with Hungary’s beaten down stock market climbing 6% amid gains in oil and gas stocks.

Small Cap Gainers:

Cadence Pharmaceuticals Inc. jumped 48% on news of a positive trial for a post-surgery abdominal pain drug. See (NYSE:PCH).
Telvent Oversees Lan-Zheng-Chang liquid pipeline operation, the largest liquid pipeline in China. Shares rise 13%. See (Nasdaq:TLVT).
Joy Global up 11% after Q4 profit rises on strong demand. See (Nasdaq:JOYG).
Energy Conversion Devices is climbing above 10% despite a maintained "sell" rating by Citi. See (Nasdaq:ENER).

• QBE Insurance Group Limited completes PMI Asia acquisition. Shares of PMI are down 10% on the news. See (NYSE:PMI).
• Small-cap homebuilder Hovnanian Enterprises Inc. missed the earnings forecast and HOV shares were off 7.5% shortly after the open. See (NYSE:HOV).

July 2008 Roundtable Part 5

Today concludes SmallCapInvestor.com’s Roundtable. In this final installment, our experts examine the alternative energy sector, compare the tech bubble burst with the current implosion of financials and take the temperature of the current state of the credit market. Taking a look at the international investing landscape, our experts still perceive the emerging nations, particularly China, to be the hottest destination for investment. And lastly our experts on average forecast the small-cap index Russell 2000 will end the year higher than it is today. (This is part five of a five part series.)

What do you think about alternative energy? Do you think that energy prices need to remain inflated for the alternative energy space to remain profitable?

Oberweis: “No, the key for alternative energy is the subsidies, quite frankly. The real danger to buying solar stocks right now is there’s some momentum in the Spanish and German markets, which are the two of the large consumers and drivers of the adoption of solar energy, to reduce or remove the subsidies that are making the technologies economical and affordable. That’s probably a much bigger and more important driver of the success of solar companies than the actual price of oil.”

O’Halloran: “Alternative energy is an industry where we have very strong forces helping the companies. We have three holdings in solar energy: SunPower Corp. (Nasdaq:SPWR), Energy Conversion Devices, Inc. (Nasdaq:ENER) and JA Solar Holdings Co., Ltd. (Nasdaq:JASO). This year we have more wind energy companies in the portfolio because wind energy is just starting to ramp up aggressively like solar did over the past couple of years.

American Superconductor (Nasdaq:AMSC) and Woodward Governor Company (Nasdaq:WGOV) — whose equipment is used to adjust turbine-generated power for conveyance to electrical grids — are a couple. There are also companies such as RBC Bearings Inc. (Nasdaq:ROLL) and Kaydon Corp. (NYSE:KDN), which make bearings for the wind turbines. Another is ITC Holdings Corp. (NYSE:ITC), which is in the process of rebuilding electrical transmission lines as part of a federal government initiative. These upgrade lines will help take energy from [wind farms], put it on to the electrical grid and get it into homes. Fuel cells and their technology and ethanol are either too early or not profitable enough for us to be involved with . . .
