China Sunergy Co Ltd (Nasdaq:CSUN), Novatel Wireless Inc (Nasdaq:NVTL) and Retalix Ltd (Nasdaq:RTLX) are among the most actively traded companies in Wednesday's trading among companies with market capitalizations under $1 billion.

FX Energy Inc. (Nasdaq:FXEN) said ahead of today’s opening that it had a successful drill stem test of the company’s Kromolice-1 well. The west central Poland exploratory well showed a gas flow with no water.

“We are encouraged with this initial [drill stem test], but keep in mind we've only drilled a few meters into the pay zone so far. We have more drilling, coring and testing to do before we can say for sure whether this is a producible gas deposit. But so far everything looks just like we expected,” said vice president of operations Andy Pierce in a statement.

The well has cored a total of 4.5 meters of Rotliegend sandstone, with another 50 meters to go, the Salt Lake City company said.

In today’s pre-market trading, shares are at $6.78, up $0.28 from Monday’s close. Shares have ranged from $3.94 to $8.35 during the past year.

FX Energy Inc. (Nasdaq:FXEN) shares are up 13% today after the oil and gas company after providing an upbeat drilling update. The company said its Grundy-2 well, which is in Poland, is currently drilling in Rotliegend sandstone at a depth of 4,625 meters. The well has now drilled 385 meters of the sandstone with gas shows throughout and no instances of water, the company said in a statement. Plans are to drill the well to a depth of 4,660 meters and perform tests to determine gas saturation and porosity. FX Energy owns a 49% interest in the well.

Shares of FX Energy are up $0.65 to $5.60 at 3:13 p.m. ET.

Middleburg Financial Corp (Nasdaq:MBRG), Community Valley Bancorp (CA) (Nasdaq:CVLL) and Circor International Inc (Nasdaq:CIR) are among the biggest percentage gainers in Wednesday's trading among companies with market capitalizations under $1 billion.

Also included among the results: FX Energy Inc (Nasdaq:FXEN), A Power Energy Generation Systems Ltd (Nasdaq:APWR), SUNOPTA INC (Nasdaq:STKL), Pyramid Oil Co (Nasdaq:PDO), Seacoast Banking Corp of Florida (Nasdaq:SBCF) and Ceco Environmental Corp (Nasdaq:CECE).

The Russell 2000 (NYSE:IWM) moved up on news of a higher-than-expected rise in producer prices and solid earnings from major players. The small-cap index added 5.99 points, or 0.87%, to 692.06. The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 60.41 points, or 0.49%, to 12,362.47.

On a year-to-date basis, the Russell 2000 has declined 9.66%, while the Dow is off 6.80% and the S&P 500 is missing 9.12%.

Small-cap stocks began the day in the green and spent the majority of the session above the flat line on news before the opening that producer prices rose a greater-than-expected 1.1% in March following a rise of 0.3% in February.

The numbers also show a jump in energy and food costs, indicating that inflation pressures remain. However, core producer prices, which exclude the costs of food and energy, rose a modest 0.2%.

“The good news is that core PPI remains tame, but how long can that last for?” global foreign exchange strategist Andrew Busch with financial services firm BMO Capital Markets wrote in a note today. “At some point, U.S. businesses . . .

Broadway Financial Corp. (Nasdaq:BYFC), Richardson Electronics, Ltd. (Nasdaq:RELL) and RehabCare Group, Inc. (NYSE:RHB) are among the biggest percentage gainers in Tuesday's trading among companies with market capitalizations under $750 million.

Community Central Bank Corp. (Nasdaq:CCBD), United-Guardian, Inc. (AMEX:UG) and FX Energy, Inc. (Nasdaq:FXEN) are also among the top small-cap percentage gainers.

Shares of independent oil and gas exploration and production company FX Energy, Inc. (Nasdaq: FXEN) are energized today following an update on the company’s productivity of its oil and gas operations for the first half of 2007.

FX Energy's production from new wells in Poland for the second quarter of 2007 was 593 million cubic feet equivalent (Mmcfe), an average of 6.5 Mmcfe per day. This is nearly triple the production rate the company experienced in the second quarter of 2006.

Production for the first half of 2007 was 1,193 Mmcfe, more than triple the amount for the first half of 2006 and also a record for FX.

The company reported that its production records also led to record revenues for the second quarter and first half of $4.5 and $8.7 million, respectively.

FX has a small presence in the U.S.; while, most of the company’s projects are located in Poland. The company holds a 100% interest in Poland of over 3.1 million acres, and partners with the Polish Oil and Gas Company in an additional 1.1 million acres.

NovaStar Financial Inc. (NYSE: NFI), Servotronics, Inc. (AMEX: SVT) and Idaho General Mines Inc. (AMEX: GMO) are among the biggest percentage gainers in Wednesday's trading among companies with market capitalizations under $500 million.

Shares of Synovis Life Technologies, Inc. (Nasdaq: SYNO) have appreciated on news this morning that the St. Paul, Minn.-based medical devices maker had a net income in the second fiscal quarter of $0.76 million, or $0.06 per share, compared with a net loss of $0.48 million, or $0.04 per share, a year earlier.  Wall Street was looking for earnings of $0.01 per share.  The stock has added $0.23, or 2%, to $13.08.
