Russell 2000: Up on crude oil dip, rally in tech stocks

Small-cap stocks edged higher Tuesday, supported by a pullback in crude oil prices, a firm tone in the U.S. dollar, a jump in tech stocks and modest buying from those who saw last week’s damage as overdone. Energy-inspired trades, both on the buy side and sell side, were also a prominent feature in stocks. The Russell 2000 (NYSE:IWM) closed up 10.28, or 1.42% at 734.38.

Despite an extended holiday weekend, trading decisions in equities continued to be directed by the same dominant element that was the focal point last week – gyrations in crude oil prices. When crude oil was higher before this morning’s opening, stocks were lower in pre-market trading, and when the energy market tumbled right before the opening, stocks started higher and held onto those gains throughout the session.

With crude oil taking a breather today, energy stocks became a profit-taking target, and one of the major drags on large-cap index products came from the energy sector. Exxon Mobil Corp. (NYSE:XOM) was off 0.8% and Chevron Corp. (NYSE:CVX) was down 1.2%. Another play on the crude oil decline came from airline stocks—a group that could use a break on the energy front after being hammered for months on end. The AMEX Airline Index was up 3.8% Tuesday, and small cap US Airways Group Inc. (NYSE:LCC) gained 4.5%, small comfort after collapsing 46% last week...

Small caps sink on crude

Small-cap stocks opened lower, pressured by a jump in crude oil prices overnight, which keeps concerns about consumer discretionary spending at the forefront. At 10:05 a.m. ET, the Russell 2000 (NYSE:IWM) was down 7.33, or 1%, at 725.68.

The headline figure for existing home sales came in above expectations at 4.89 million versus the projection of 4.85 million. Although that figure was slightly better than expected, stock index futures were little changed immediately after the release. The inventory of homes for sale was up 10.5% to a record high, which may have offset any upbeat reaction to the headline figure.

Crude oil prices bounced overnight, lifted by strikes in France that could block tanker traffic and by residual support from a surprising drop in crude oil stocks in this week’s inventory data. In addition, the dollar was soft against the euro heading into today’s U.S. open, which underpinned crude oil prices.

Stock markets around the world were in a selling mood overnight, which also weighed on U.S. equities on the opening. Although Japan was up 0.2% last night, most of the other major countries were down, with Hong Kong off 1.3%, China down 0.9%, Australia down 1.0%, Singapore down 1.2% and Bombay off 1.5%. The biggest overnight loss was seen in Karachi, which tumbled 4.7% in response to a rate hike by the State Bank of Pakistan.

Large caps in the news this morning included Haliburton Co. (NYSE:HAL), which announced a bid of $3.4 billion for U.K. firm Expro International. This marks two consecutive days of M&A deals in the energy sector, and provides some . . .

Russell 2000 likely to sag

The Russell 2000 (NYSE: IWM) futures are slightly higher but the small-cap index will be weighed down by a spike in the price of oil and unimpressive economic news.

The price of oil has continued climbing to record highs, up more than $0.50 and approaching $87 a barrel. Investors are pointing to tight inventories as winter approaches and tensions along the border between Iraq and Turkey.

Overseas, the major indices in Europe fell after Swedish maker of wireless infrastructure equipment Ericsson warned that its third-quarter profit will decline 36% due to lower demand.

Contributing to the bearish mood before the start of trading is news after the close on Monday that U.S. Federal Reserve chairman Ben Bernanke told the Economic Club of New York that the stagnation in the housing sector will be a drag on economic growth going into 2008.

Investors will be waiting to see an index an index on September industrial production, scheduled to be released at 9:15 a.m. ET. The measure is expected to show a slowdown.

Here are the biggest percentage gainers and losers in pre-market trading among companies with a market cap between $100 million and $750 million:

IXYS Corp. gives lower guidance for second quarter

IXYS Corp. (Nasdaq: IXYS) after the close issued downward guidance for the current quarter ending this month.

IXYS said it now expects net revenues for the three months ending June 30, 2007, to be between $70 and $72 million. IXYS had originally anticipated net revenues would be approximately flat as compared with revenues of $74 million for the first quarter ended March 31, 2007.

IXYS, which historically has not provided guidance for gross margins, expects gross margins to clock in between 27% and 30% for the second quarter. Gross margins for the first quarter were 24.1%.

"It is not our practice to revise our guidance unless we expect a material change from our previous guidance; nor is it our practice to issue guidance on gross margins," said Uzi Sasson, IXYS COO and CFO. "We do not plan to issue guidance on gross margins in the future."
