Homebuilders LEN, KBH, TOL Up With Fed Holding RateStocks moved higher today after several positive reports reversed early downward trading trends. Investors initially drove down stocks on news that first time unemployment claims increased by 15,000 last week. Gains were made in homebuilders like Lennar (NYSE:LEN), KB Homes (NYSE:KBH), and Toll Brothers (NYSE:TOL) as well as retailers like Bed Bath & Beyond (Nasdaq:BBBY), Kirkland's (Nasdaq:KIRK), and Pier One (NYSE:PIR). Both sectors have seen bankruptcies (Linens and Things, Circuit City, among others) and layoffs over the past year as the souring economy has brought housing starts to a crawl and forced consumers to pull back in discretionary spending. Small-cap stocks in the Russell 2000 helped propel that index 2.87% to close at 509.14 today. Leading small-cap gainer was Jazz Pharmaceuticals (Nasdaq:JAZZ) up 37% on news that the late-stage results for its fibromyalgia drug had met the company's main goal. The drug, Xyrem, is scheduled to be submitted for marketing approval. Gains in Jazz shares outpaced gains made by other, better known, pharmaceutical manufacturers including Pfizer (NYSE:PFE), Merck (NYSE:MRK), and share price losses posted by GlaxoSmithKline (NYSE:GSK). As we've mentioned in previous updates, this follows a general trend of sector rotation as investors are looking for more defensive plays, like healthcare and pharma, over the summer. Other small-cap gainers for today include CPI International (Nasdaq:CPII) up 32%; Tween Brands (NYSE:TWB) up 27% on news that Dress Barn (Nasdaq:DBRN) will buy it for roughly $157 million in stock; Royale Energy (Nasdaq:ROYL) up 32.5%, an energy company involved in development and exploration of natural gas and oil in California, Texas, and the Rocky Mountain region. Small-cap decliners were lead by medical oral diagnostics maker OraSure Technologies (Nasdaq:OSUR) down 23% on news that it needs to conduct more additional clinical trials to get approval for its hepatitis C virus test. The exact timing and costs for these additional tests have not been disclosed by OraSure and investors drove down share prices based on this uncertainty. A number full of other small-cap stocks were big decliners today including data marketing services provider Acxiom Corporation (Nasdaq:ACXM) down 22%; Capital Bank Corporation (Nasdaq:CBKN) down 20%; and Cordorus Valley Bancorp (Nasdaq:CVLY) down 19%.
KVB, SEH, and ROYL Lead Small Cap GainersStocks extended their gains today with all of the major indices closing up from this morning's open. The Dow Jones Industrial average closed at 8,770.92, up 0.37%; the Nasdaq added 9.29 points to close at 1,862.37; and the S&P 500 closed up 5.74 points at 944.89 for a 0.61% gain. The small-cap stock bellwether index, the Russell 2000, was up 1.05% to close at 529.23. Small-cap decliners were lead by Shanghai-based Linktone (Nasdaq:LTON) down 17.36% on unaudited Q1 results showing revenues at $14.8 million compared to $19.4 million for Q4, net income from continuing operations of $0.1 million compared to $1.1 million from Q4, net income of $0.3 million versus $0.6 in Q4. Setting a new 52-week high today was American Dairy (NYSE:ADY), closing at $43.38. American Dairy produces and distributes milk powder, soybean milk powder, and related dairy products in China. American Dairy had been trading between $10 and $18 for much of 2009 until May 15 when it surged to $28.48 and continued on to $35.08 by May 19, pulling back, then steadily moving up again. After the closing bell on May 14 American Dairy announced Q1 2009 versus Q1 2008 sales increase of 191%, income from continuing operations increase of 523%, and net income up 282%. *****The International Energy Agency (IEA) reported that demand for oil is picking up. Instead of the 3% drop in demand, the IEA says that it now expects demand to be off a whopping - drumroll please - 2.9%. Sheesh. When you're talking about 83.5 million barrels a day, a one-tenth of a percent revision should not be headline news. Somebody owes me an apology. But seriously, I think it's pretty much understood that any statistic thrown out there by some agency or department is subject to revision. In fact, I get suspicious when numbers don't get revised… *****Economics is the study of a human system of production and consumption of goods. And because it's a human system, there must always be some margin for error. Especially at this stage of the recession/recovery, numbers are going to swing wildly. Retail sales, foreclosures, payrolls, it doesn't matter - the headline number will get revised. Of course, this is what makes investing interesting. The data can only take you so far. And if one relies solely on economic data for buy and sell signals, poor results are inevitable. *****As you know, I was quick to jump on oil stocks at the start of the current rally. Oil was trading around $40 a barrel when I recommended three small oil stocks in my SmallCapInvestor PRO advisory service and also recommended Graham Corp (AMEX:GHM) here to Daily Profit readers. Obviously, investor sentiment toward oil has changed dramatically since I first started pushing oil stocks. That's what happens when an asset doubles in price in just a few months. In fact, the bullish sentiment behind oil and oil stocks is so extreme that I've told SmallCapInvestor PRO to sell one oil stock and take the 142% gains we had off the table. Oil prices are due for a big correction, and there's no way I'm going to lose such a nice gain. I'll be buying back oil stocks sometime this summer. And if you missed the big gains in oil this time around, don't worry, you'll get another chance. I'll cover oil consistently here in Daily Profit. And you can also get my stock recommendations on the next sector to run up, China, for SmallCapInvestor PRO HERE. So far this year, SmallCapInvestor PRO members are averaging 43% gains per recommendation. *****I have one more announcement today. Jason Cimpl, the technical analyst for TradeMaster Daily Stock Alerts has graciously offered to start sharing his weekly forecasts with Daily Profit readers on Fridays. So tomorrow, you should get your first video chart analysis from Jason. He's done a great job of keeping his readers in profitable trades during this rally. And his insights into what's driving stock prices and where they are likely to head next should prove a worthy addition to this letter.
Russell remains red into midday; CVVT, AIPC, and LGCY lead gainersSmall-cap stocks remained in negative territory into midday trading even as the Dow zigzagged back and forth from lower to higher ground. Small caps rise as oil retreatsSmall-cap stocks are rising in afternoon trading, as crude oil dropped to about $136 a barrel and the U.S. dollar gained on both the euro and the yen. Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke further fueled bullish sentiments by suggesting the central bank could extend emergency lending to financial firms in a morning speech. At 2:38 p.m. ET, the Russell 2000 (NYSE:IWM) was up 9.38, or 1.42%, at 667.64, while the Dow was up 52.67, or 0.47%, at 11,284.63. “Today, Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke said that the U.S. central bank may keep an emergency lending facility for big Wall Street firms open past the critical year end turn as the Fed hopes to restore financial market stability,” Andy Busch, global foreign exchange strategist for BMO Capital Markets, wrote in an email. “Given the panic Monday in Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, I think this will help cool some of the hype/panic of another looming financial market meltdown.” Broad market sectors on the rise this afternoon include airlines, restaurant services, groceries, railroads, major drug companies, trucking transportation and life insurance. Sectors experiencing a sell-off include coal, metal mining, oil and gas operations, iron and steel, construction and agricultural machinery, hotels and motels, gold and silver and chemical manufacturing. Small-cap companies making news this afternoon include natural gas and oil company Royale Energy Inc. (Nasdaq:ROYL), which is down 14% in afternoon trading as a result of crude oil prices dropping from last week's record-highs. InterDigital Inc. (Nasdaq:IDCC) is falling more than 23% this afternoon after the company announced the start of a hearing in the U.S. International Trade Commission against Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd. Small caps smash support, sink to two-month lows
Small-cap stocks broke down Tuesday, smashing key chart support amid fretting about dour consumer confidence, rising oil prices and jagged nerves ahead of Wednesday’s FOMC announcement. The Russell 2000 (NYSE:IWM) closed down 11.89, or 1.65%, at 707.92, the lowest daily close since April 22.

The market was already wobbly coming into today’s action, and when consumer confidence plunged to a fresh 16-year low, the bulls pulled their chips off the table en masse. The headline reading on consumer confidence was at 50.4%, down from 58.1% last month and well off the median forecast of 56.4%. The plunge in consumer confidence puts consumer spending at risk, which puts any economic recovery at risk as well. After the close, ABC News released its own Consumer Comfort index (a weekly data series), which edged up for the week, but the quarterly figure was on track for the worst showing since 1992. The confidence number completely overshadowed the Case-Shiller report, which came out early today and which showed a numbing drop of 15.3% for home prices over the same period last year. However, the number was not as bad as forecast, and there were some pundits who argued that this could be a sign that the housing market collapse is near the bottom. It’s an argument that lost power as the market lurched into . . .

Russell slumps on crude, weak financials
Small-cap stocks pulled lower Monday, unable to escape the familiar bearish shadow of rising crude oil prices and slumping financial shares. The Russell 2000 (NYSE:IWM) tumbled 5.92, or 0.82%, to 719.81, the second-lowest daily close since early May.

Small caps were noticeably soft relative to the large-cap Dow, which found comfort from energy-related gains in Exxon Mobil Corp. (NYSE:XOM), which gained about 2.3% to play a supportive role for the Dow 30. Speaking of energy, crude oil prices climbed about 1% past $136 dollars a barrel, a brazen show of support given the fact that Saudi Arabia pledged to increase production. However, the possibility of more supplies was lapped up amid worker strikes in Nigeria and heightened Middle East tensions following last week’s news that Israel staged a large practice military strike against Iran’s nuclear production facilities. The U.S. dollar managed to push higher today despite the rally in crude oil prices, gaining about 0.5% against the euro and about 0.4% versus the yen. However, advances in the greenback were trimmed back from better levels seen into the U.S. stock market opening, when soft Eurozone economic data bolstered the buck. Every new trading day seems to bring with it a new bearish scare for the battered financial sector and today’s fright du jour was a warning from influential analysts at Goldman Sachs that the credit crunch will get a “second wind” and that junk bond defaults will rise more quickly than expected. Goldman also said that regional . . .

Small caps in the redAfter briefly surging in morning trading, small-cap stocks sagged in afternoon trading. A drop in crude oil prices, positive factory orders data and comments by Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke encouraged buyers, but bearish comments by hedge fund investor George Soros gave investors pause. At 2:23 p.m. ET, the Russell 2000 (NYSE:IWM) was down 7.10, or 0.96%, at 733.92. Bernanke indicated that the Fed will not increase interest rates again until the housing market stabilizes. The chairman also said financial markets have improved but are still strained. "We are attentive to the implications of changes in the value of the dollar for inflation and inflation expectations and will continue to formulate policy to guard against risks to both parts of our dual mandate," Bernanke said.
