Versar net income increases 292% YOY for fiscal 2007Shares of Versar, Inc. (Amex: VSR) are on the uptick today after the professional services firm reported robust revenue and earnings for fiscal year 2007. For the fiscal year ended June 29, 2007, the Springfield, Va.-based company reported that net income increased 292% to $5.3 million, or $0.62 per share, from $1.3 million, or $0.16 per share in fiscal year 2006. No analyst estimates were available. Gross revenue for the year was $102.7 million, or 69% greater than revenue of $31.8 million earned in the prior fiscal year. Net income for the fourth quarter of fiscal year 2007 was $803,000 compared with a quarterly loss of $199,000 during the same period last year. Gross revenue for the company’s fourth quarter increased 69% to approximately $30.2 million. Versar said the strong results can be attributed to large program management projects for the Air Force and Army’s rebuilding efforts in Iraq as well as large construction projects and public aquatic facilities in the United States.

Retailers start rallyWall Street is posting solid gains this morning on news of positive U.S. retail sales in June. At 10:33 a.m. ET the Russell 2000 had gained 7.95 points, or 0.95 percent, to 847.92. The Dow Jones Industrial Average was up 126.89 points, or 0.93 percent, to 13,704.76, above its record close of 13,676.32 on June 4. U.S. retailers increased their sales in June, led by Wal-Mart Stores Inc. (NYSE: WMT), which announced that same-store sales increased 2.4%, beating its own expectations. The Bentonville, Ark.-based giant had projected a rise of no more than 2%. The rise in retail sales suggests that the American consumer remains resilient in the face of higher gas prices. However, department stores Macy’s Inc. (NYSE: M) and J. C. Penney Company Inc. (NYSE: JCP) and Saks Inc. (NYSE: SKS), which operates Saks Fifth Avenue, saw a decline in June comparable store sales. In economic news, the U.S. trade deficit in May widened to $60.04 billion from $58.67 billion in April, the Commerce Department said before the opening bell. That’s inline with expectations. The Associated Press reported on Sunday that General Electric Co. (NYSE: GE) is buying thin film products from DayStar Technologies Inc. (Nasdaq: DSTI). America First Apartment Investors, Inc. (Nasdaq: APRO) reported it has signed a contract with Sentinel Omaha LLC, an affiliate of the privately held Sentinel Real Estate Corp., for $25.30 per share, or about $532 million in cash. Professional services company Versar Inc. (AMEX: VSR) announced it was awarded a design and build contract for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. Russell 2000 drops as Dow claims record
The Russell 2000 lost nearly a full percentage point while the Dow set a new record as investors reacted to news of mild U.S. inflation in April. In small cap action, shares of LanOptics Ltd. (Nasdaq: LNOP) fell on news of a quarterly loss, while InPhonic, Inc. (Nasdaq: INPC) dropped on an announcement that it’s facing a new class action lawsuit.
