Acorda Therapeutics soars on trial resultsAcorda Therapeutics Inc. (Nasdaq: ACOR) shares are soaring after the biopharmaceutical company said a study showed its experimental multiple sclerosis drug does not increase the risk for certain side effects. “We are delighted with the results of this QT study, and are looking forward to completing our second Phase 3 trial of Fampridine-SR in multiple sclerosis patients in the second quarter of this year,” CEO Ron Cohen said in a statement. Fampridine-SR, a drug for improving the walking ability in people with multiple sclerosis, is being studied in a clinical trial to assess its safety and effectiveness. The Hawthorne, N.Y.-based company held a morning conference call on Jan. 28 to discuss the results of the trial. In morning trading, ACOR shares are up 16.85%, or $3.67, at $25.45. Over the last 52 weeks, shares have ranged from $15.80 to $26.58.
Russell 2000 futures lowerThe Russell 2000 (NYSE: IWM) futures are pointing lower and the small-cap index is poised for a decline. Small-cap stocks are headed for a bearish opening at the start of a week that will see a number of important economic releases, as well as the U.S. Federal Reserve’s decision on interest rates, which will be announced at the conclusion of a two-day meeting on Wednesday. The only thing on the docket is a report on new homes sales for December. The U.S. Census Bureau will release the numbers at 10 a.m. ET, with economists expecting to see a decline. Concerns about the U.S. economy are dominant this morning, with fast food chain operator McDonald’s Corp. (NYSE: MCD) reporting that sales at restaurants open at least 13 months were unchanged in December, while analysts were expecting a rise. Similarly, Towson, Md.-based power tool maker The Black & Decker Corp. (NYSE: BDK) forecasted that its first-quarter profit will disappoint analysts.

Alexandria, Minn.-based Rural Cellular Corp. (Nasdaq: RCCC), which provides wireless communications services in rural America, has purchased a high-capacity WAP solution that will allow it to better stream content to users’ handsets. The WAP gateway, produced by Interop Technologies, can deliver customized content with the operator’s brand and increase capacity without disrupting existing service, Rural Cellular reported before market open. The company said that it hopes the acquisition will help it better deliver content such as news, sports and weather.

Economists had projected a deficit of $63 billion, following March’s revised deficit of $62.39 billion. Bond yields on 10-year Treasury notes climbed to 5.25% today. Yields broke 5% on Thursday for the first time since August, leading to a sharp decline of U.S. stocks. High yields make bonds look more attractive relative to stocks.
