Holding company Cheviot Financial Corp. (Nasdaq:CHEV) is up 33% today after posting second-quarter results that were 64% higher than the same quarter a year ago. For 2008’s second quarter, Cheviot’s net income was $0.45 million, or $0.05 per share, compared with $0.27 million, or $0.03 per share, for the same quarter a year ago. The quarter-over-quarter increase reflects a $0.29 million increase in net interest income, the Cincinnati-based company said.

In today’s trading, shares are up $2.23 at $9 on more than double the average volume. During the past 52 weeks, shares have ranged from $6.74 to $13.44.

Catalyst Semiconductor Inc (Nasdaq:CATS), MGIC Investment Corp (Nasdaq:MTG) and Cheviot Financial Corp (Nasdaq:CHEV) are among the biggest percentage gainers in Thursday's trading among companies with market capitalizations under $1 billion.
