Friday's Top Performing Small Cap Stocks (ZOLL, STMP, MXWL, CPSI, CELL)

Whew. As much of the country sweltered in July's heat, and all eyes were on the spending stalemate in Washington, stock investors scurried to find safe havens.

A wave of positive earnings news on Friday helped small-cap investors generally pick out some individual winners and emerge from the month in better shape than their large-cap brethren.

However, the two leading indexes that track small caps, the Russell 2000 Index and the Standard & Poor's Small Cap 600, both finished July with substantial losses: The Russell was off 3.6 percent, with the S&P Small Cap down 3.3 percent.

Computer Programs & Systems down after missing Q3 revenue projections

Computer Programs & Systems, Inc. (Nasdaq: CPSI) shares are edging down after the health care information technology company reported third-quarter net income of $3.2 million, or $0.30 per share, above analyst estimates but below $3.4 million, or $0.32 per share, a year earlier.

Quarterly revenue increased to $28 million, below Wall Street projections of $27.97 million and from $27.3 million during the same period of 2006.

In morning trading, CPSI shares are down 2.86%, or $0.71, at $27.30. Over the last 52 weeks, shares have ranged from $24.85 to $37.59.

Computer Programs and Systems falls on Q2 profit decline

Shares of Computer Programs and Systems, Inc. (Nasdaq: CPSI) are trading in negative territory following news of a second-quarter profit decline.

The net income for the period ended June 30 was $3.3 million, or $0.31 per share, 19.2% lower compared with a net income of $4.1 million, or $0.38 per share, during the same three-month period of 2006, the Mobile, Ala.-based healthcare information technology company announced after Thursday’s close.

Revenues also took a hit, falling 3.5% to $28.0 million, compared with $29.0 million during the second quarter of 2006.
