Pre-market: Optium's outlook disappoints

Horsham, Pa.-based Optium Corp.’s (Nasdaq: OPTM) fourth quarter fiscal 2007 outlook fell short of Wall Street’s projections.  The company expects net income to be between $0.08 per share and $0.11 per share, the supplier of high-performance optical subsystems said after Wednesday’s close.  Analysts were looking for earnings of $0.17 per share.  The stock is down $0.13, or 1%, to $15.69.

Modest gains to start the week

U.S. stocks are posting small gains this morning, following news of major shakeups in the automotive industry.

At 9:49 a.m. ET the Russell 2000 was up 0.86 points, or 0.1%, to 830.40. The Dow Jones Industrial Average was up 46.65 points, or 0.35%, to 13,372.87.

Attention is focused on the U.S. auto sector this morning, following news that DaimlerChrysler (NYSE: DCX) has sold its majority stake in Chrysler to private equity group Cerberus Capital Management for $7.45 billion.  Nine years ago Germany’s Daimler-Benz AG purchased Chrysler for $36 billion.

According to news report this morning, members of Ford Motor Co.’s (NYSE: F) founding family are considering selling part of their controlling stake in the company.

Pre-market: Critical Therapeutics gets FDA approval

Lexington, Mass.-based Critical Therapeutics, Inc. (Nasdaq: CRTX) announced this morning that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved its drug for the treatment of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD).  Nevertheless, shares are down $0.03, or 2%, to $1.65.

End-to-end electronics manufacturing services SMTC Corp. (Nasdaq: SMTX) reported this morning that its first-quarter net income was $2.8 million, or $0.19 per share, approximately three times net income reported in the first quarter 2006.  Analysts were expecting earnings of $0.05 per share.  The Canadian company’s stock is up $0.03, or 1%, to $3.07.

New record for Dow, Russell lower

April 19 (SmallCapInvestor.com) – The Dow closed at a record high for the second day in a row despite fears of overheating in China, while the Russell posted another loss.  Among small caps, a downwardly revised earnings forecast hurt shares of KVH Industries, Inc. (Nasdaq: KVHI) while shares of Maxco Inc. (Nasdaq: MAXC) will be delisted.

The Russell 2000 lost for the third consecutive day, dropping 5.06 points, or 0.61 percent, to 819.32, after setting a record high of 831.44 on Monday.  The Dow Jones Industrial Average improved on Thursday’s record close, adding 4.79 points, or 0.04 percent, to 12,808.63.
