Cutera Q2 revenues beat Street view; shares up 13%

Cutera Inc. (Nasdaq:CUTR) is up 13% in today’s trading after the company reported earnings that beat Wall Street views, despite being lower than a year ago. For the second quarter, net income was $0.66 million, or $0.05 per share, compared with $2.03 million, or $0.14 a share, for the same period a year ago. Revenues were $24.8 million, up 4% from a year ago. Analysts were expecting earnings per share of $0.02 on revenues of $23.5 million.

The Brisbane, Calif.-based company makes laser medical devices primarily used in cosmetic procedures. The company said a slowdown in the economy hurt its quarterly earnings.

At 11:12 a.m. ET, shares are at $11.36, up $1.27 from Monday’s close. Shares have ranged from $8.92 to $27.80 during the past year.

Small drop for Russell 2000

The small-cap Russell 2000 index joined the other major U.S. indices in losing ground as investors consolidated their gains in anticipation of Wednesday’s meeting of the Federal Reserve.  Among specific small-cap stocks, Cutera, Inc. (Nasdaq: CUTR) said its net income missed expectations, while Playboy Enterprises Inc. (NYSE: PLA) reported a strong first quarter.

The Russell 2000 lost 0.97 points, or 0.12 percent, to 830.90.  The Dow Jones Industrial Average snapped its five-day winning streak, losing 3.90 points, or 0.03 percent, to 13,309.07.

Bears awaken

U.S. indices are falling across the board this morning as investors consolidate their positions after a week of gains.  On Wednesday the Federal Reserve will meet to discuss its interest rate policy.
 
At 9:57 a.m. ET the Russell 2000 had lost 7.06 points, or 0.85 percent, to 824.81. The Dow Jones Industrial Average was down 68.51 points, or 0.51 percent, to 13,244.46

In business news, shares of Hewlett-Packard Co. (NYSE: HPQ) are rising on news the world’s largest PC maker reported second-quarter earnings above Wall Street’s expectations.  Revenues also outpaced analysts’ estimates, buoyed by strong sales of home computers and servers.

Cutera Inc. stocks falls on revised ’07 guidance

Cutera Inc.’s (Nasdaq: CUTR) stock lost nearly a quarter of its value in after-hours trading today after the Brisbane, Calif., provider of laser and other light-based aesthetic systems lowered its 2007 guidance.

Shares were down by $7.14, or 24.4%, to $22.10 after the closing bell. The stock has traded between $16.35 (on May 31) and $38.80 (on April 4) in the past year. More than 779,000 shares had changed hands, compared with an average three-month daily volume of 458,000 shares.

Looking ahead, the firm predicted second quarter non-GAAP earnings of $0.14 on revenue of $23 million, and for the year, non-GAAP earnings of $1.07 on revenue of $110 million.

Monday after hours

Shares of Answers Corp.’s (Nasdaq: ANSW) stock plunged by $3.14, or 22.2%, to $11 in after-hours trading today after the Israeli company reported first-quarter earnings that missed analysts’ earnings estimates but which exceeded revenue estimates. For the three months ended March 31, Answers reported non-GAAP net income of $103,000, or $0.01 per share, on revenue of $3.4 million, compared with a non-GAAP net loss of $750,000, or $0.10, on revenue of $1.2 million in the 2006 first quarter. Two analysts polled by Thomson First Call had estimated earnings per share of $0.02 on revenue of $2.99 million. The Jerusalem-based firm owns and operates Answers.com, an Internet information portal.

Overhill Farms Inc.’s (AMEX: OFI) stock rebounded by $0.77, or $12.9%, to $5.18 in after-hours trading today after closing down 12.5% following the company’s reporting fiscal second quarter income that came in below analysts’ estimates. For the quarter ended April 1, the Los Angeles, Calif.-based company said it earned $875,000, or $0.06 per share, on record revenue of $46 million, compared with net income of $1.2 million, or $0.08 per share, on revenue of $43.7 million in the prior year. One analyst polled by Thomson First Call had estimated earnings per share of $0.10 on revenue of $53 million. Overhill Farms supplies frozen foods to foodservice, retail and airline customers.

Wednesday after hours

Avici Systems Inc. (Nasdaq: AVCI) plunged $3.04, or 22.5%, to $10.50 on unusually heavy volume after the routing systems provider announced plans to transition away from core router development to focus on its new product initiative, Soapstone Networks. The company also announced a special dividend of $2 per share and released its first quarter financial results, which included a profit of $6 million, or $0.42 a share.
