Bulls in control

The Russell 2000 small-cap index and the Dow are in positive territory this afternoon. At 2:26 p.m. ET the Russell 2000 was up 2.37 points, or 0.28%, to 852.50. The Dow Jones Industrial Average had gained 38.36 points, or 0.28%, to 13,604.20.

Shares of Epoch Holding Corp. (Nasdaq: EPHC) are appreciating following news the provider of investment advisory services has increased its assets. As of June 30, the assets under management were $6.0 billion, a rise of 12%, compared with assets of $5.4 billion as of March 31, the New York-based company said after Thursday’s close. Shares are up $0.67, or 5%, to $13.69.

Russell 2000 zooms ahead

The Russell 2000 small cap index is leading a Wall Street rally sparked by news that core U.S. inflation barely rose in May.
 
At 10:01 a.m. ET the Russell 2000 was up 11.09 points, or 1.32 percent, to 848.21. Dow Jones Industrial Average had added 89.50 points, or 0.66 percent, to 13,643.22.

The core consumer price index, which excludes the cost of food and energy, increased just 0.1% in May, the U.S. Labor Department said before the market open. That’s less than the expected rise of 0.2%.

Overall, U.S. consumer prices increased 0.7% in May, the most since September 2005. Prices increased 0.4% in April. The rise was primarily due to higher energy costs.

The numbers suggest that underlying inflation is tame, easing concerns the U.S. Federal Reserve will look to raise interest rates in the future.

Russell 2000 moves up

April 4 (SmallCapInvestor.com) – Stocks gained ground in midday trading today as the price of oil declined further. In small cap action, shares of investment firm Epoch Holding Corporation (Nasdaq: EPHC) rose on news of an increase in assets, while sneaker maker Heelys Inc. (Nasdaq: HLYS) got an analyst upgrade due to strong sales.
