Friday’s pre-market gainers and losersHere are the biggest percentage gainers and losers in pre-market trading among companies with a market cap between $50 million and $750 million: Biggest percentage gainers: • Aceto Corp. (Nasdaq:ACET), up 13% after the distributor of chemically derived pharmaceuticals, biopharmaceuticals, specialty chemicals and crop protection products posted fiscal third-quarter earnings Friday morning that trumped the consensus on Wall Street and posted sales that increased 29.5% from the year-ago quarter. Biggest percentage losers: • NGAS Resources, Inc. (Nasdaq:NGAS), down 8% after the natural gas exploration and production company reported first-quarter revenues after Thursday’s close that fell below the Street’s view.
Small cap futures flatThe Russell 2000 (NYSE: IWM) futures are little changed but the small-cap index might move up slightly. Stocks posted large gains on Friday, when shoppers flocked to U.S. retailers for holiday shopping and post-Thanksgiving Day bargains. Sales on “Black Friday,” as it has come to be known, were 8.3% higher than a year ago, according to ShopperTrak, a provider of shopper traffic counting information software. However, the National Retail Federation said that sales per individual shopper were down. That tells us that the discounts offered by retailers succeeded in enticing more shoppers to visit the stores, but individual consumer spending was lower due to the effects of the slump in the U.S. housing sector, high energy prices and a credit squeeze. No major economic releases are scheduled for today. Here are the biggest percentage gainers and losers in pre-market trading among companies with a market cap between $100 million and $750 million: Biggest percentage gainers: • Cyclacel Pharmaceuticals Inc. (CYCC), up 9%. Biggest percentage losers: • Cardiome Pharma Corp. (CRME), down 7% on news that it will delay drug trial results.
Small cap futures downThe Russell 2000 (NYSE: IWM) futures are lower and the small-cap index will probably open with a fall as investors worry about the U.S. economy. The mood on Wall Street is bearish as investors weighed news of rising oil prices and the U.S. Federal Reserve lowered its growth outlook for the U.S. economy. On Tuesday the Fed forecasted that growth will slow in 2008 and unemployment will creep up slightly. In other economic news, the Labor Department reported that jobless claims for the week ended Nov. 17 decreased 11,000 to 330,000 from the previous week’s upwardly revised level of 341,000. The four-week moving average, considered a more stable measure, fell 750 to 329,750 from 330,500 a week earlier. Here are the biggest percentage gainers and losers in pre-market trading among companies with a market cap between $100 million and $750 million: Biggest percentage gainers: • NGAS Resources Inc. (NGAS), up 11% on news it has priced an offering of 4.2 million shares of its common stock at $6 per share. Biggest percentage losers: • China Finance Online Co. Ltd. (JRJC), down 23% despite news of a rise in quarterly profit.
Futures up, Russell 2000 probably downThe Russell 2000 (NYSE: IWM) futures are slightly higher but the small-cap index will mostly likely be weighed down. Housing starts surprisingly increased 3% in October, but the slump in the U.S. housing sector looks to continue. The Census Bureau reported this morning that builders broke ground on 1.229 million homes at an annual rate, above the 1.193 million figure reported in September. That’s bullish news, surprising economists looking for a modest drop. However, buildings permits, a sign of future construction, fell 6.6% to an annual rate of 1.178 million. That’s the lowest level in more than a decade and a sign that the housing woes will continue. In other news, investment bank Goldman Sachs Group, Inc. (NYSE: GS) warned in a report that U.S. housing prices are likely to continue falling, dragging down the economy and increasing write-downs on securities based on residential mortgages Here are the biggest percentage gainers and losers in pre-market trading among companies with a market cap between $100 million and $750 million: Biggest percentage gainers: • Restoration Hardware Inc. (RSTO), up 15% on news Sears Holdings Corp. (SHLD) has bought a stake in the company. Biggest percentage losers: • MTC Technologies Inc. (MTCT), down 5%. spacer spacer spacer spacer spacer spacer spacer spacer spacer spacer spacer spacer spacer spacer spacer spacer spacer spacer spacer spacer spacer spacer spacer spacer spacer spacer spacer spacer spacer spacer spacer spacer spacer spacer spacer spacer spacer spacer spacer spacer spacer spacer spacer spacer spacer spacer spacer spacer spacer spacer spacer spacer spacer spacer spacer
