NPS Pharmaceuticals drops 14% as GlaxoSmithKline cuts study short

Shares of NPS Pharmaceuticals Inc. (Nasdaq:NPSP) dipped by 14% this morning on the news that drug giant GlaxoSmithKline has cut short a joint study involving Ronacaleret, a potential treatment for osteoporosis.

In a late Thursday afternoon filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission,  Bedminster, N.J.-based NPS Pharmaceuticals said GlaxoSmithKline had prematurely terminated the Phase 2 study “due to an observed lack of efficacy based on lumbar spine and hip bone mineral density.”

Under the original agreement signed by the two companies, GlaxoSmithKline paid NPS Pharmaceuticals a total of $26.1 million for license fees, research support, milestone payments and equity purchases as part of the collaboration that it will not be required to pay back.

By mid-morning, NPS Pharmaceuticals is at $7.15, down $1.18 from Thursday’s close. The stock has traded as low as $3.45 and as high as $8.96 during the past 52 weeks.

Small caps ready to rise

The Russell 2000 (NYSE: IWM) futures were higher less than an hour before the opening and the small-cap index will likely open in positive territory.

Retailers posted generally weak same-store results for September, but investors are bullish following news that Wal-Mart Stores Inc. (NYSE: WMT) raised its third-quarter profit outlook.

The Bentonville, Ark.-based giant, the world’s largest retailer, projects a net income of $0.69 per share for the third quarter, above the previous forecast of $0.65 per share.

In economic news, jobless claims for the week ended Oct. 6 fell by 12,000 to a level of 308,000, according to the U.S. Labor Department. Economists were expecting a smaller drop to a seasonally adjusted level of 315,000, following an upwardly revised reading of 320,000 a week earlier.

The numbers indicate a tight labor market.

Pre-market: China Sunergy increases Q2 production

China Sunergy Co., Ltd. (Nasdaq: CSUN), which manufactures solar cells, announced this morning that it increased its second-quarter production of solar cells 93% on a year-over-year basis. Nevertheless, its shares fell $0.36, or 3%, to $13.61.

Shares of Fieldstone Investment Corp. (Nasdaq: FICC) are rising following news after Monday’s close that the Columbia, Md.-based mortgage banking company has received conditional approval from the State of New York for the merger of Fieldstone and a subsidiary of residential mortgage asset company C-BASS. Shares are up $0.55, or 17%, to $3.82.
