On lowered expenses, wood wholesaler Jewett-Cameron Trading Co Ltd. (Nasdaq: JCTCF) reported higher third-quarter income.

Sify Ltd. (Nasdaq: SIFY) reported it is partnering with Microsoft (Nasdaq: MSFT) to bring Internet and information technology services to India.

Investment firm William Blair & Company initiated research coverage of advertising and marketing company MDC Partners Inc. (Nasdaq: MDCA) with an “outperform” rating.

Vital Images, Inc. leads Wednesday small-cap percentage losers

Medical imaging company Vital Images, Inc. (Nasdaq: VTAL) revealed disappointing second-quarter preliminary results and cut its annual revenue guidance.

Speaker manufacturer Directed Electronics, Inc. (Nasdaq: DEIX) lowered its income guidance to between $0.95 and $1.05 per share, blaming lower-priced Sirius radio units.

On a 27% plunge in revenue, Amityville, N.Y.-based Hi-Tech Pharmacal Co. (Nasdaq: HITK) swung to a fourth-quarter loss.

Stocks soften as yields rise

The Russell 2000 is flat and the Dow has fallen on news that U.S. bond yields have increased after an optimistic economic report. At 11:34 a.m. ET the Russell 2000 was down 0.21 points, or 0.02%, to 847.99. The Dow Jones Industrial Average had lost 26.18 points, or 0.19%, to 13,551.12.

Shares of Rio Vista Energy Partners L.P. (Nasdaq: RVEP) are higher following news the operator of a liquefied petroleum gas terminal facility in Mexico will acquire all the assets of oil and gas explorer Northport Production Co. for $18 million. Rio Vista will issue 900,000 restricted units of the master limited partnership and a $9 million note, both payable to Northport, in order to finance the deal, the Houston-based company said this morning. Northport operates 100 wells in the United States. The acquisition has not yet been approved by the companies’ boards. Shares of Rio Vista are up $0.72, or 6%, to $12.66.

U.S. Xpress Enterprises, Inc. leads Monday small-cap percentage gainers

A management-led team of truckload carrier U.S. Xpress Enterprises (Nasdaq: XPRSA) announced it plans to initiate a $20 per share offer for all class A common stock.

The Associated Press reported on Sunday that General Electric Co. (NYSE: GE) is buying thin film products from DayStar Technologies Inc. (Nasdaq: DSTI).

America First Apartment Investors, Inc. (Nasdaq: APRO) reported it has signed a contract with Sentinel Omaha LLC, an affiliate of the privately held Sentinel Real Estate Corp., for $25.30 per share, or about $532 million in cash.

Professional services company Versar Inc. (AMEX: VSR) announced it was awarded a design and build contract for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. The contract is associated with the base realignment and closure program at Fort Lee, Va.

Orexigen Therapeutics, Inc. (Nasdaq: OREX) announced its weight loss treatment Contrave showed a positive effect on visceral fat and insulin resistance in a mid-phase study.

European hedge fund firm GLG Partners announced its plan to go public though a transaction with Freedom Acquisition Holdings, Inc. (AMEX: FRH).

Citing a new management team and expansion outside its core denim business, CIBC World Markets upgraded True Religion Apparel, Inc. (Nasdaq: TRLG) to “sector outperformer” from “sector performer.”

Build-A-Bear Workshop, Inc. (NYSE: BBW) cut its second-quarter guidance to between $0.07 and $0.10 per share, down from between $0.15 and $0.19 per share. The St. Louis-based company cut its view because of less-than-expected sales over the last two months.

Terremark Worldwide, Inc. (Nasdaq: TMRK) delayed filing its annual report with the SEC, citing delays in collection and compilation of certain financial information.
