Small-cap stocks start out weak; APWR, ALDN, and HOLX

Small-cap stocks edged lower in a fairly weak start to this week’s trading, pulled down by worries about corporate profits as we enter the unofficial start of earnings season this afternoon. Energy and commodity stocks were a source of worry early today as crude oil futures extended the recent slide.  Some of today’s small-cap gainers are A-Power (Nasdaq:APWR), Aladdin Knowledge Systems (Nasdaq:ALDN) and Hologic (Nasdaq:HOLX).

Other Market Watch highlights today included:

• Overseas markets were lower coming into today’s session, which likely weighed on the market as well.  
• The dollar was firm against the euro this morning, which could also weigh on other commodity markets and stocks with close ties to physical markets.  
• Crude oil prices tumbled more than $2 a barrel into the U.S. stock market opening, which could pull down energy stocks.
• U.S. markets took a hit on Friday; today is relatively quiet before we get a flood of economic data later this week.  
• The Russian ruble fell to the lowest point in more than five years and the IMF warned that western Europe was behind the curve on implementing stimulus plans.

Small Cap Gainers:

• GE joins with A-Power on wind turbine gearbox equipment; shares of A-Power rise 21%. See (Nasdaq:APWR)
Aladdin Knowledge Systems agrees to buyout at 20% premium; shares rise 14%. See (Nasdaq:ALDN).  
Hologic Q1 profit view above estimates, shares up 14.5%. See (Nasdaq:HOLX). 
• Q4 revenues up at Carrols Restaurant Group; shares rise 10%. See (Nasdaq:TAST).  

Small Cap Losers:

• Cleaning and maintenance solutions firm Zep, Inc. down 22% after reporting Q1 results last week. See (NYSE:ZEP).  
Patriot to shutter Jupiter mine in West Virginia; shares drop over 18%. See (NYSE:PCX).
Spartech Corporation down 13% on lower-than-average volume. See (NYSE:SEH).  
Simcere Pharmaceutical Group announces preliminary full-year revenue and earnings; shares trade 10% lower. See (NYSE:SCR).

Stocks tumble at closing; VTIV, GLBC and LL lead gainers

Stocks tumbled yet again today, with the Russell 2000 (NYSE:IWM) closing down 3.65%, losing nearly 10% in the first two days after the U.S. presidential election. Today’s small-cap gainers are inVentive Health (Nasdaq:VTIV), Global Crossing (Nasdaq:GLBC) and Lumber Liquidators (NYSE:LL).

Other Market Watch highlights today included:

• For the year, the Russell is now off 35%, while the Dow is down 34% and the S&P 500 is down 38%.
• Goldman Sachs is predicting that a jolting 300,000 people lost their jobs last month (the consensus forecast is minus 180,000). Goldman also is looking for the unemployment rate to jump to 6.4%, up 0.3% from last month.
• Monthly confidence survey today among corporate CEOs read that 66% of CEOs expect employment to fall in coming months.
• Among S&P sector groups, only homebuilders managed a 1% rise, but there were 10 sectors generating declines greater than 10%.
• Commodities got hammered today, with copper slumping 5%.
• Crude oil fell to 19-month lows yet airline stocks stayed negative; when those two trade in tandem, recession is dominating psychology.
• Energy stocks were a major drag on the market, with the Energy Select Sector SPDR Fund sinking nearly 7%.

Small Cap Gainers:

• inVentive Health Inc. jumped 38% as the provider of commercialization services to pharmaceutical and health care firms reported a jump in third-quarter revenues. See (Nasdaq:VTIV).
• Global Crossing Ltd. rallied 19% as the IP solutions provider also got an earnings-related lift. See (Nasdaq:GLBC).
• Lumber Liquidators' income rose 48% in Q3; shares closed up 18.8%. See (NYSE:LL). 
• Simcere Pharmaceutical Group reports rise in Q3 profit, reaffirms FY08 . . .

Small-cap stocks extend the morning slide; LL, GCA, and AEL lead gainers

Small-cap stocks extended the morning slide into midday trading, as pressure from a weak economy continues to take a toll on commodity, retail and financial stocks, overshadowing even aggressive rate cuts out of Europe overnight. Today’s small-cap gainers are Lumber Liquidators' (NYSE:LL), Global Cash Access (NYSE:GCA) and American Equity's (NYSE:AEL).

Other Market Watch highlights today included:

• Thomson-Reuters October same-store sales index was off 0.7%, and they pegged today’s retail returns as the worst monthly results in a decade.  
• Energy exporters that depend on demand from big consumers were taking a beating, with the Energy Select Sector SPDR Fund down 5.5%. 
• The IMF said that developed economies were on track for a full-year contraction for the first time since World War II.  
• The malaise continued to bruise commodity markets, with crude oil prices tumbling toward $60 a barrel, or the lowest prices since March.  
• The Russell 2000 is down 2% in midday trading.

• Lumber Liquidators' income up 48% in Q3; shares soar 18%. See (NYSE:LL). 
•  Global Cash Access Holdings reports successful Q3 results; shares climb 25%. See (NYSE:GCA).

• Global Crossing Ltd. rallied 19% as the IP solutions provider also got an earnings-related lift. See (Nasdaq:GLBC).
• Simcere Pharmaceutical Group reports rise in Q3 profit, reaffirms FY08guidance. Shares up 18%. See (NYSE:SCR).

• LandAmerica dives 33% on delayed third-quarter earnings. See (NYSE:LFG).
• Georgia Gulf Corporation slips to loss in Q3; shares down 28%. See (NYSE:GGC).

Small-cap stocks continue low; BXC, VQ, and MHS lead gainers

Small-cap stocks extended morning losses into the midday time frame, as another batch of dour economic numbers quickly refocused attention from the U.S. elections back onto the recession. Today's small-cap gainers were BlueLinx Holdings (NYSE:BXC), Venoco, Inc. (NYSE:VQ) and Medco Health (NYSE:MHS).

Other Market Watch highlights included:

• Commodities (a big plus for the market on Tuesday) were struggling today. Crude oil prices were off 7% after soaring 10% Tuesday.  
• The best performers are homebuilders, health care services, managed health care and office supplies.  
• Forest products, tire and rubber stocks, health care facilities, coal, Internet retail and broadcast TV companies are the worst performers.  
• The jobs issue is now on the front burner ahead of Friday’s big employment report, which is expected to show a nasty decline.  
• Drug, technology and financial shares paced today’s decline, fueled by worries that a recession in the U.S., global slowdown would dampen corporate profitability and deepen jobs losses.

• Independent energy company Venoco, Inc. up 16% on higher-than-average volume. See (NYSE:VQ).  
Medco Health shares up 13% after seeing 38% rise in Q3 profit. See (NYSE:MHS).  
Natural Gas Services Group announces a 43% increase in Diluted EPS for Q3; shares climb over 11%. See (NYSE:NGS).  
Genco Shipping cancels agreement to acquire six drybulk newbuildings; shares up over 8%. See (NYSE:GNK).

NeuStar reports Q3 results, downgraded to "buy" from "strong buy." Shares dive 20%. See (NYSE:NSR).
Ashford Hospitality Trust down 20% after naming interim CFO. See (NYSE:AHT).  
• Reports say Advance America, Cash Advance could take $42M hit if forced to close Ohio centers. Shares careen 15%. See (NYSE:AEA).
• Fitch downgraded Colonial BancGroup's ratings last week; shares dive over 22% today. See (NYSE:CNB).

Small-cap stocks pushed higher on the opening; SB, BRKR, and SOLA lead gainers

Small-cap stocks pushed higher on the opening, but gains were short of expectations built on pre-market futures activity. Support was tied to further declines in lending rates and advances in overseas equities, but the focus today was clearly on the elections underway in the United States. Today’s small-cap gainers are Safe Bulkers Inc. (NYSE:SB), Bruker Corp. (Nasdaq:BRKR) and ReneSola (Nasdaq:SOLA).

Other Market Watch highlights today included:

• With a little more than 70% of the S&P 500 reporting results so far, profits have been down about 10%, which is slightly below expectations.
• Bank stocks were strong performers in Europe thanks to the lower lending rates, and U.S. banks were also in rally mode this morning.   Nov 04, 2008 10:07am
• Libor rates are now down more than 2% from the peak seen in the credit crisis when banks were so mistrustful that they weren’t even lending to each other.  
• On the inter-bank lending front, three-month Libor rates tumbled to a five-month low and are now below the levels in place before the stock market collapse in September.  
• The factory orders report came out at minus 2.5%, which was below the forecast for a decline of 1.5%. Market noticeably trimmed gains afterward.

Safe Bulkers Inc. continued to be a hot stock as the marine transporter jumped 31% after being one of the biggest small-cap movers on Monday. See (NYSE:SB).  
Bruker Corp. is up 16% after reporting Q3 results on Monday. See (Nasdaq:BRKR).  
ReneSola updates production capacity plans, shares trading 8.5% higher on unusual volume. See (Nasdaq:SOLA).  
Simcere Pharmaceutical Group up 10% on light volume. See (NYSE:SCR).

Kenexa Corp. down 28% as the employment search firm reported earnings, CEO says that the “business environment deteriorated” toward end of quarter with difficult economic climate. See (Nasdaq:KNXA).
Herbalife tops with Q3 EPS but misses with sales and guides below Street; shares down 16% in pre-market. See (NYSE:HLF).  
• EDF unit completes Eagle Energy Partners acquisition; shares of Energy Partners careen 15%. See (NYSE:EPL).
Coldwater Creek falls 6% in after hours. Expects Q3 loss, pulls Q4 guidance. See (Nasdaq:CWTR).
