Russell futures advance

The Russell 2000 (NYSE: IWM) futures are gaining ground on the second to last trading day of the year amid news of possible asset sales by big banks.

Citigroup Inc. (NYSE: C) and HSBC Holdings, are among U.S. and European banks that are considering major asset sales, The Wall Street Journal is reporting this morning. Citigroup could sell an 80%-held student loan, its North American auto-lending unit, its 24% stake in Brazil credit-card operation Redecard and the bank's Japanese consumer finance business. HSBC might liquidate its auto-finance business.

The Census Bureau is expected to report new home sales for the month of November at 10 a.m. ET. Economists are that forecasting new home sales slid to 715,000 from 728,000 in October.

Also due out at 10 a.m. ET, the Chicago arm of the National Association of Purchasing Managers will report Chicago-area manufacturing index. The index is forecasted to edge down to 52 from 52.9 the previous month. A reading above 50 signals factory-sector expansion, while a reading below 50 signals contraction.

In small-cap news, a judge ruled Thursday that The Finish Line, Inc. (Nasdaq: FINL) must complete its $1.5 billion acquisition of mall retailer Genesco Inc. (NYSE: GCO) because it and advisor UBS reportedly knew about risks to Genesco's earnings. Finish Line said it may appeal.

Stocks also advanced as investors increased odds that the Federal Reserve will cut interest rates, quelling concerns of a recession.

Biggest percentage gainers:

Chordiant Software Inc. (CHRD), up 15.8% to $9.40 on news that it that it has entered into a Global Framework Agreement with a leading telecommunications company for $26.1 million.
Telestone Technologies Corp. (TSTC), up 5.3% to $6.86.
Allos Therapeutics, Inc. (ALTH), up 5.3% to $7.

Biggest percentage losers:

Cirrus Logic Inc. (CRUS), down 4.9% to $5.
American Dental Partners, Inc. (ADPI), down 2% to $10.
China Technology Development Group Corporation (CTDC), down 1.7% to $9.76.

Telestone Technologies receives positive response from China Mobile

Shares of Telestone Technologies Corp. Ltd. (Nasdaq: TSTC) jumped in pre-market trading after the developer and provider of wireless communication coverage solutions said that it received a positive response from China Mobile on additional trails carried out on its Wireless Fiber Distribution System (WFDS) technology.

Telestone reported that China Mobile concluded in its report that: ''WFDS reached and exceeded the performance standards required by TD-SCDMA networks. WFDS also holds an obvious advantage over traditional 2G indoor wireless coverage systems in terms of its system performance, construction costs and practical application.''

Shares of Telestone (TSTC) jumped 9.69%, or $0.68, to $7.70 in pre-market trading. Shares of Telestone have been trading in the range of $3.85 to $11.12 for the past 52 weeks.

Pre-market: Hoku Scientific inks $185 million contract

Kapolei, Hawaii-based clean energy company Hoku Scientific Inc. (Nasdaq: HOKU) announced after Wednesday’s close that it has signed a $185 million contract with German solar power company Solar-Fabrik AG for the sale and delivery of polysilicon over a seven-year period beginning in the second half of 2009. Shares are up $0.74, or 11%, to $7.69.

Shares of Telestone Technologies Corp. (Nasdaq: TSTC) are trading higher following news this morning that the Chinese wireless communications company has been chosen as the official provider for China Mobile, which is building test networks in eight cities.

Telestone Technologies Corp. leads Thursday small-cap pre-market volume

Wireless communications coverage solutions provider Telestone Technologies Corp. (Nasdaq: TSTC) announced Thursday it won the bids for the TD-SCDMA trunk amplifiers and combiners from China Mobile LTD TD-SCDMA trial networks.

Ethonal producer Pacific Ethanol Inc. (Nasdaq: PEIX) hired Douglas Jeffries as its new CFO. Jeffries previously served as has more vice president of finance and chief accounting officer at eBay Inc as well as worked in finance and technology at GenCorp, Red Herring Communications, Cardinal Health and Price Waterhouse Coopers.

Neurochem Inc. (Nasdaq: NRMX) announced it received a third recommendation from the European Data Safety Monitoring Board to continue its ongoing European Phase III clinical trial for tramiprosate, Neurochem's investigational product candidate for the treatment of Alzheimer's disease.

Russell 2000 looks up

The Russell 2000 index is gaining ground along with the other major indices on news of a smaller-than-expected rise in U.S. inflation.  Among specific small cap companies, shares of Astea International Inc. (Nasdaq: ATEA) skyrocketed on news of a positive first quarter, while poor financial results hurt shares of Sutron Corp. (Nasdaq: STRN).

At 11:15 a.m. ET the Russell 2000 had gained 1.06 points, or 0.13%, to 829.39.  The Dow Jones Industrial Average was up 81.18 points, or 0.61%, to 13,427.96.
