Allos Therapeutics Inc. (Nasdaq:ALTH), Amedisys Inc. (Nasdaq:AMED) and Novavax Inc. (Nasdaq:NVAX) are among the most actively traded companies in Thursday's trading among companies with market capitalizations under $1 billion.

Bakers Footwear Group, Inc. leads Tuesday small-cap percentage losers

B. Riley & Co. downgraded footwear retailer The Finish Line, Inc. (Nasdaq: FINL) to “neutral” from “buy” with a target price of $15, from $13.

Vical Inc. (Nasdaq: VICL) reported that preliminary late-stage trial results showed a drug candidate successfully treated the blood flow disease ischemia by increasing the size of blood vessels.

Allos Therapeutics, Inc. leads Tuesday small-cap pre-market volume

Allos Therapeutics, Inc. (Nasdaq: ALTH) reported its clinical trial for Efaproxyn failed to show that the drug improved survival in women with breast cancer that spread to the brain.

EPIX Pharmaceuticals, Inc. (Nasdaq: EPIX) announced that it has received a negative response from the FDA regarding the company's appeal for immediate approval of Vasovist, a treatment used to diagnose vascular disease.

Syntax-Brillian Corp. (Nasdaq: BRLC) is launching its new 65” LCD high-definition television today.

Vical Inc. (Nasdaq: VICL) reported that preliminary late-stage trial results showed a drug candidate successfully treated the blood flow disease ischemia by increasing the size of blood vessels.

Analyst William Ho raised his rating on Acorda Therapeutics Inc. (Nasdaq: ACOR) to “buy” from “neutral.”

American Technical Ceramics Corp. leads Monday small-cap percentage gainers

American Technical Ceramics Corp. (AMEX: AMK) reported it agreed to be acquired by AVX Corp. (NYSE: AVX) for $24.75 per share, or about $231 million in cash, which represents a 47% premium to Friday’s closing price.

Vical Inc. (Nasdaq: VICL) said a trial of its gene-delivery technology reported positive results.

LMI Aerospace, Inc. (Nasdaq: LMIA) reported it plans to buy engineering services company D3 Technologies for $65 million in cash.

Wall Street opens flat

U.S. stocks opened close to the flat line following little news save for the latest corporate deal-making.

At 10:19 a.m. ET the Russell 2000 was down 4.73 points, or 0.56 percent, to 843.46. Dow Jones Industrial Average had lost 14.06 points, or 0.10 percent, to 13,625.42.

Australia’s BHP Billiton Ltd. (NYSE: BHP), the world’s largest mining company, is renewing its $40 billion bid for Pittsburgh, Pa.-based aluminum producer Alcoa Inc. (NYSE: AA), according to Britain’s The Times newspaper.

Elsewhere, General Electric Co. (NYSE: GE) may join forces with Pearson PLC, which publishes the Financial Times, to make an offer for Dow Jones & Company, Inc. (NYSE: DJ) that tops that of Rupert Murdoch’s News Corp. (NYSE: NWS), according to The Wall Street Journal.

Pre-market: Stemcells completes trial enrollment

Shares of Stemcells Inc. (Nasdaq: STEM) have appreciated on news this morning that the pharmaceutical company has successfully completed enrollment for a Phase I clinical trial of its treatment for Batten disease, a fatal disorder of the nervous systems. Shares are up $0.02, or 1%, to $2.46.

Shares of Canadian pharmaceutical company Labopharm Inc. (Nasdaq: DDSS) are higher following news over the weekend that it has received a notice of compliance from regulators for its pain management tablets and can now begin marketing. Shares are up $0.16, or 6%, to $2.89.

Pre-market: Vical Inc. receives $6 million grant

Shares of Vical Inc. (Nasdaq: VICL) are sagging despite news this morning that the San Diego-based pharmaceutical company has been awarded a three-year, $6 million grant from the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) for a DNA vaccine manufacturing process.  Shares are down $0.05, or 1%, to $4.95.

Shares of Repligen Corp. (Nasdaq: RGEN) are trading higher following news this morning that the Waltham, Mass.-based pharmaceutical company has received a favorable ruling from the U.S. District Court for the District of Massachusetts on a patent infringement lawsuit involving ImClone Systems Inc. (Nasdaq: IMCL).
